On November 3, 1990, Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice hits #1 in the US, marking the first time a rapper has topped the chart. At first, his press kit suggested that he grew up among gangs in a rough Miami neighborhood and went to school with Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew. On June 15, 1989, 2 Live Crew released As Clean As They Wanna Be. This is the clean version of their album As Nasty As They Wanna Be which was released a few months earlier in February. The song Pretty Woman, a poor cover by Roy Orbison, is only on the clean album and has earned them a lawsuit from Roy. The song Break It On Down nevertheless contains some vulgarities as well as City of Boom. Me So Horny becomes an opportunity for Brother Marquis to watch Arsenio Hall instead of holding his bozack and The Funk Shop has changed its title. On June 14, 1990, four days after being arrested for performing obscene songs at a Florida nightclub, the rap group 2 Live Crew performed at the Ozone Club outside of Atlanta. Authorities had warned the group that they would be arrested if they performed their dirty songs, so the rappers encouraged the crowd to sing the obscene lyrics for them, resulting in about 500 people singing lines like "that's the way we like to f--k" as police officers looked on. No arrests are made, and the group gets even more publicity and a bump in sales for the album they released a year earlier. O n June 6, 1990, The 2 Live Crew album As Nasty As They Wanna Be becomes the first album declared legally obscene when Federal District Judge Jose Gonzalez ruled that the album violates community obscenity standards. The ruling sets off a censorship firestorm which drives sales of the album past 2 million copies. On May 13, 1985, the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) held a meeting in a Washington church where they fomented support for their agenda: a ratings system for albums and concerts like those used for movies, and also to keep offensive album covers out of view in record stores. Their efforts lead to warning stickers on albums with offensive lyrics. The stickers succeed in keeping laws off the books regulating the music, but many stores, including Sears, J.C. Penney and WalMart, refuse to carry albums with the stickers. It becomes common practice for labels to release "clean" and "dirty" versions of albums, and also a marketing tactic: 2 Live Crew issue their As Nasty As They Wanna Be album in edited form as As Clean As They Wanna Be - most buyers opt for the nasty. On March 7, 1994, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that song parodies are “fair use” and do not require the permission of the copyright holder. The decision stemmed from a case where 2 Live Crew was accused of using Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman.” Le 7 mars 1994, la Cour suprême des États-Unis a statué que les parodies de chansons constituaient une «utilisation équitable» et ne nécessitent pas l'autorisation du détenteur des droits d'auteur. Le 7 février 1989, le groupe 2 Live Crew sortait As Nasty As They Wanna Be, leur 3e album. C’est le premier album de l’histoire de la musique à avoir été reconnu comme obscène par la cour. Voici quelques paroles traduites pour voir si c'est bien le cas: Les filles me demandent toujours pourquoi je baise autant. Je dis "Qu'est-ce qui ne va pas, poupée, avec une petite noix? (Me So Horny). Je veux baiser, parce que ma bite est sur l'os. Espèce de petite pute à huis clos, tu boirais mon sperme et rien de plus (The Fuck Shop). C’est le dernier album paru avec Skyywalker Records après une poursuite du créateur de Star Wars George Lucas, c’est devenu Luke Records.  On February 7, 1989, 2 Live Crew released As Nasty As They Wanna Be, their 3rd album. It is the first album in the history of music to be recognized as obscene by the court. Songs like Me So Horny and The Fuck Shop pissed off judges in Florida and conservatives in the United States.  This is the last album release

Le juge a déclaré la poursuite irrecevable car la phrase ‘’It’s Your Birthday’’ est commune et ne relève pas des droits d’auteur.  On January 21, 2006, an idiot lawsuit was started by Luther Campbell, well known for 2 Live Crew, at 50 Cent. The judge ruled the suit inadmissible because the phrase "It's Your Birthday" is common and does not fall under copyright.
