On September 29, 2011, unfortunately we learned about the passing of Sugar Hill Records label founder Sylvia Robinson. The label’s biggest hit was Rapper’s Delight by The Sugarhill Gang. Other releases of note are The Message by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, That’s The Joint by Funky 4 + 1, On The Radio by Crash Crew, Spoonie is Back by Spoonie Gee and Action by Treacherous Three. In 1987, she founded Bon Ami Records, the group The New Style released their first album there. For their second album, their name was Naughty by Nature. The documentary I Want My Name Back, from 2001, lifts the veil on the questionable practices of the Robinson family towards various hip-hop artists including The Sugarhill Gang.
