Her father was imprisoned in the Buchenwald concentration camp during the Nazi regime. She was discovered as a singing talent in 1971 at the age of 15 in the Central Pioneer Camp (today Feuerkuppe Holiday Park) in Straußberg near Sondershausen.

The statement specifically referenced "misogynistic lyrics and social media posts" and "accusations of sexual misconduct" as factors in their decision.
