La chanteuse soul née en Arkansas a sorti sept 45 tours entre 1965 et 1970 avec Phelectron Records de Los Angeles, Modern Records des frères Bihari, l'australienne W & G, Specialty de Beverly Hills et Paula Records qui était une division de Jewel Records. Elle travaillait avec le réalisateur Maxwell Davis qui a aussi oeuvré avec ZZ Hill, BB King, Lowell Fulsom, Little Richard et Preston Love.

In 1976, she received the Grammy award for best new artist at the 18th annual ceremony for which she became the first African-American recipient as well as the first r&b act to win the prize. In 2000, she released an autobiography, Angel on My Shoulder, which described her battle with drugs during much of her life, including heroin and crack cocaine. At one stage of her addiction, she worked as a prostitute's tout in order to fund her expensive habit.

José María Blanc a ensuite formé La Barca et est également artiste solo.
