On August 20, 1972, Stax Records commemorated the seventh anniversary of the 1965 Watts riots with a star-studded benefit concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum called Wattstax. More than 100,000 fans showed up to hear Isaac Hayes, The Bar-Kays, The Staple Singers, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Ernie Hines, Albert King, William Belle, The Dramatics, Eddie Floyd and Kim Weston, among others, perform at what became known as Black Woodstock. On August 26, 2023, Big Daddy Kane headlined a Hip Hop 50 event at the O2 Forum Kentish Town in London. During the show, Kamanchi Sly from British group Hijack came on stage wearing a mask and simply stood in front of the cheering audience. Kane tolerated the interruption for a few minutes but ended up stopping the music to confront the agitator. Hijack was scheduled to perform after Big Daddy Kane. This was considered disrespectful by Hijack, which is why Sly invaded the stage. Ice-T signed Hijack to his own Rhyme Syndicate label, they recorded and released the single "The Badman is Robbin'" (Rhyme Syndicate, 1989). The track reached number 56 on the UK Singles Chart. Hijack's debut album, The Horns of Jericho (Rhyme Syndicate, 1991), was recorded around the same time.
