In Decoded, he states he used “99 Problems” to confuse critics and point out their own ignorance by hiding a deeper story behind a superficial chorus. The chorus hook “I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain’t one” is taken from the Ice-T single “99 Problems” from the album Home Invasion (1993). The hook was coined during a conversation between the High Rollers rapper & Brother Marquis of Miami-based 2 Live Crew. He went old-school for the beat, he linked with Def Jam Recordings co-founder Rick Rubin, who was a key producer of seminal, hard-hitting beats for the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC and LL Cool J. Jay a découvert la chanson pour la première fois dans un club londonien : elle ne ressemblait à rien d’autre. La ligne de basse était propulsive et familière, mais il lui a fallu une seconde pour réaliser qu'elle provenait de la chanson thème de Knight Rider. Tout ce qu'il savait, c'est que c'était quelque chose de totalement nouveau. C’était comme de la musique du monde dans le meilleur sens du terme. The bass line was propulsive and familiar, but it took me a second to realize it was from the theme song of Knight Rider. All I knew was it was something totally fresh. It felt like world music in the best sense. I wanted to make a party song, but the international feeling of the track moved me into a different direction. So I dropped a line against the Iraq war. The track was released in February of 2003 as a single, with an accompanying video.
